The Gutjwa Appeal Team

The following are the core team who have put together this appeal.  As always, there are others who, in so many ways, have helped to get this appeal off the ground.

Lorraine
Hird – NZ:  Project Leader
LAH
The one with the big idea…well actually a small idea till Peter came along and encouraged me to dream big.  I am a long distance motorcyclist (260,000kms / 160,000 miles covering 50+ countries) with a pre-travel background in market research.  I visited Gutjwa, was stunned at the energy and motivation of the Principal and her team in circumstances that would discourage so many others.  These were not people who would be corrupted or disabled by being given a helping hand.  These were people who would take whatever help we could give and use it all for the benefit of the students.  My biggest asset?  Having seen so many aid projects where little is delivered on the ground, I know that we can do better because we are hands on – we guarantee every cent/penny donated will be used to improve the school.

After all, the whole team are like minded volunteers.

Peter Scatchard – UK:  UK Fund-Raiser

PMS
Peter adopted the Gutjwa cause and has established and accepted the position of Secretary of the Gutjwa Appeal Fund in the UK.  An experienced marketing manager, and ex-journalist with motorcycling in his blood, Peter has used his skills and creativity, not to mention his personal and business network, to devise a number of fund raising avenues.
The biggest to date has been his personal undertaking – a motorcycle fund raising ride on the 1959 Norton Dominator he's owned since 1966 that took him and his long time buddy, Neil Stafford, through England and around the top of Scotland.... 1800 miles (2880kms) in just 8 days raising just over
£4,500.

Neil  Stafford – UK

NS
Neil agreed to turn his leisurely restoration of his 1960 Norton into a fast track activity to join Peter, on his equally old Norton, for an oft touted ride around Scotland.... frantically and successfully filled in the gap in the middle, as shown in the photo, but just 24 hrs short to get the required roadworthiness certificate ... so he had to ride his Honda Fireblade instead!  Life is tough ....

Neil, whose career has been in finance, has accepted the position of Treasurer of the Gujtwa Appeal Fund in the UK as a further means to up the ante for the children at Gutjwa.

Bill Irwin – NZ:  Ben Fellowes - NZ/UK:  Webmaster

A well travelled kiwi motorcyclist, language buff and nature lover as well as a very skilled computer businessman whom we met on a trip to the Isle of Man, Bill offered his site for the gutjwa-appeal site.  Left to me, without his guidance on web construction programmes, there would be no web site.

Ben, on contract with an IT project in the UK, has upgraded the original site to give it a more professional look and make it more user friendly and has responded every time I yelled 'Help?!' solving issues effortlessly and acting as webmaster.

Sally Manchini – Australia:  PR

A full time University student with exams imminent, Sally also helps to run a business along with keeping a family going.  Yet despite the demands on her time, and as a friend of Peter’s, offered to look over any publicity material produced by our team of amateurs to keep us on the right path.

Bruce & Marguerite Fellowes- NZ

Bruce and Marguerite
Design/build property developers, Bruce and Marguerite offered to draw up plans … which, because of the lack of information we were able to supply, even necessitated them counting the bricks in the photos we sent them to try to estimate the fall of the land.

Check out the practical plans they came up with...

Lets make most of this happen!
