Progress Update

In August, two special kiwis, Pete and Diane Williams from Dunedin, volunteered to spend part of their time in South Africa helping out at Gutjwa.  Armed with lots of DIY skills and a ton of motivation, they literally rolled up their sleeves ….  and just see what they, Thomas Mhonko, a local tradesman, and some willing helpers accomplished inside of a limited time frame!

From the broken ceilings:

Broken Ceiling       Hallway        Broken ceiling 1

Post tornado damage .... only the roof had previously been repaired leaving the internal damage

And, with lots of work.......

Ceiling removed    Work in progress     Pete

Removing the damaged boards             Classroom doubling as a workshop           Pete hard at work ...ooohhh the neck!

Look what the school finished up with….. !!!!

                                                                                   New ceiling
It looks (and smells?) like a new classroom

Meantime, Diane cleaned, scraped, sanded and plastered walls in readiness for painting and helped organise new notice boards for all of the classrooms.  Pete repaired the leak in the kitchen roof which kept dousing the fire…

Old notice board                                  New notice boards

The old notice board                                  and                                 The new noticeboard

Everyone pitched in ….. using low tech solutions to reach those hard-to-get places

Siena painting         A happy painter     Health and safety issues

Even the school's Principal, Siena, got stuck in     The learners were also happy to be able to help      Not sure health and safety would agree

But all too soon, it was time to say Thank you and Good bye ….

                                         Sienas speech      Teacher send off

Siena giving her thank you speech and teachers in traditional clothing to say farewell to Pete and Diane

All of this activity, and the rest that will follow, has only been achieved with grateful thanks to all of those generous people who have donated to the project and, of course, to Diane and Peter Williams, as our first volunteers, for their immeasurable donation of time and effort ….

Diane and Pete report that they were not sure what they were letting themselves in for ...."but there were funny moments...we did enjoy interacting with everyone...they are so genuine and warm... and came away feeling very appreciated for our efforts...we understood their appreciation when we realized how many children and schools there are in townships and how hard it will be for the govt to ever provide enough.   It felt good to make a little difference.   We feel our experience at the school was the cream on the cake after a great holiday in Southern Africa which included mixing with Springbok rugby supporters, and viewing many animals in nearby Kruger National Park."

Please keep checking out the web site … there will be ongoing work and the next 'burst' of activity is planned to start mid-October.
